Project CIRCLE-Circular Innovation and Resilient City Labs in the Adrion Region

Funded by the Interreg ADRION programme

Programme priority: 2) Sustainable Region, SO: Enhance the capacity in transnationally tackling environmental vulnerability, fragmentation, and the safeguarding of ecosystem services in the Adriatic-Ionian area

Objective: The CIRCLE project aims to increase and expand knowledge in the field of sustainability of circular economy principles through collaboration among innovative actors in the business, administrative and financial sectors, as well as in civil society, and within urban regions where the largest amount of waste is produced, which are also places where innovative models can be implemented.

Project partnership: MUNICIPALITY OF FORLI –IT – Lead Partner,  ROMAGNA TECH – IT,  SCHOOL VELENJE CENTAR – SI, RRA NOVA GORICA – SI, REDEA – HR, ENERGO DATA – HR, ANATOLIKI – GR, AEIPLOUS – INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – GR, EKOFONDRS – BIH, MUNICIPALITY OF LAKTAŠI – BIH, FUTURA – SRB, RDA BANAT – SRB, MUNICIPALITY OF ULCINJ – MNE, MUNICIPALITY OF TIRANA – ALB.

Associate partners:  MUNICIPALITY OF THERMI (GR), MUNICIPALITY OF KALAMARIA (GR).

Description: The project CIRCLE aims at promoting waste management/recycling models by increasing and spreading knowledge on practical viability of circular economy principles, through planning and implementation of a collaborative approach involving innovation producers (R&D and innovation public/private centers), business actors (waste management companies, industry, services/utility providers), administrative and financial organisms (regional/local authorities, banks),as well as civil society within urban areas, where the biggest amount of waste is produced but that are also the places where innovative solutions can be implemented. To foster knowledge and support towards the practical implementation of sustainable waste management models, project will develop Circular Innovation Resilient Cities Labs (CIRCLabs), through which to design and test circular models based on collaborative and multidisciplinary approach involving targeted stakeholders. CIRCLabs will be jointly designed after analyzing the most effective models in this field at EU level. Main pilot activities of CIRCLabs’ will be divided into: 1) industrial symbiosis (transformation of waste materials produced from some industries into usable materials for others); 2) organic wastes: they can largely be recovered for various applications (e.g. biogas, composting); 3) electronic and electrical equipment wastes (WEEE): valuable materials, e.g. copper, can be recycled; 4) construction and demolition wastes (CDW), from which recycled aggregates, recycled feed, re-used bricks, plastic-board can be obtained. Each pilot activity above will be developed by 2-3 project partners: pilot 1 will be jointly developed by Forlì, Anatoliki and FUTURA; 2 by Ulcinj, ENERGODATA, RRASP, EKOFONDRS; pilot 3 by Laktasi, RDA BANAT, REDEA, SCV; pilot 4 by AEIPLOUS, Romagna Tech and Tirana.  A transnational action plan, containing operational projects for each field above, and a network of CIRCLabs set up will be established.

Duration: 01.02.2020-31.07.2022
