Ecoremediation Programme
DEGRADED AREAS IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

The aim of the project is to define current state which includes identification, classification and evaluation of geographic balance of degraded areas in the Republic of Serbia through creation of a unified database on eco status within an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS). Synthesizing these pieces of information and applying simulation (modeling), a forecast of future degradation processes trends would be enabled. This aim also covers proposed remediation measures (recultivation), rehabilitation, maintenance and development of natural and anthropogenic ecosystems, evaluation of their effects and provision of recommendations for further examinations.

The first phase of the project stipulates organization of an international conference “Degraded Areas and Ecoremediation” to be held on 21 and 22 May at the Faculty of Applied Ecology – Futura and at ecological classroom on Veliko ratno ostrvo. This international conference is a logical extension of the international conference “Ecoremediation” held in Paracin on 7 and 8 December 2008 under the auspices of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and in organization of the Environmental Protection Fund, Research & Development Centre Futura and Regional ERM Centre Paracin. This conference was closed with the Declaration of the Regional ERM Network, which indicates the need of treatment of degraded area in the Republic of Serbia from the national-regional aspect, which would enable full insight into the spatial degradation problem.
